CHRISTUS Health/Texas A&M University School of Medicine Program

The CHRISTUS Health/Texas A&M University School of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program is located in Longview, Texas, and is committed to training future physician leaders who deliver excellent patient care in East Texas and beyond. The program provides a strong foundation in patient safety, quality improvement, palliative care, evidence-based medicine, high-value care, and healthcare inequities. Residents benefit from a supportive learning environment, protected educational conference time, rigorous inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences, and opportunities for scholarly activities.

Application Process: The program selects applicants who are graduates of accredited US medical schools or International Medical Graduates with ECFMG certification, preferring those who completed medical school within the last five years. They require USMLE or COMLEX score transcripts (DO candidates may submit either or both), with preference for passing test scores on the first attempt. Required materials include a Dean’s Letter, three letters of recommendation (preferably one from the Internal Medicine Department Chief or Program Director), CV, personal statement, and photo. Applicants must be able to interview via Zoom and be prepared for three years of residency training, with orientation in the last two weeks of June. International Medical Graduates play a vital role in the program, and visa sponsorship may be considered.

Curriculum: The program offers a comprehensive curriculum with a variety of rotations including inpatient wards, MICU/CCU, night float, emergency department, ambulatory care, and electives in numerous subspecialties. It emphasizes both a primary care and hospitalist pathway. Didactic learning includes tumor board, journal club, morbidity and mortality, quality improvement and research, and patient safety conferences among others.

Training Sites: Residents train primarily at CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center - Longview, a 400-bed regional referral center offering a diverse patient population and a variety of healthcare settings.

Medical Student Rotations: The program has a tradition of training medical students and offers rotations for third and fourth-year students with a focus on hands-on, clinical training alongside the residency program.
