The Duke University Hospital Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency Program offers a six-year comprehensive training program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Residents gain experience in general and vascular surgery, critical care, cardiac anesthesia and catheterization, and cardiac and thoracic surgery.

The program provides residents with exposure to world-renowned heart and lung transplantation programs, top-echelon adult and congenital heart surgery programs, and high annual operative volumes. Additionally, Duke Health has the highest volume of thoracic organ transplants in the United States, offering residents a robust operative experience in complex cardiac and thoracic surgery.

The curriculum includes rotations at Duke University Hospital, Durham VA Medical Center, and Duke Regional Hospital. The educational structure consists of three years of balanced training in general, vascular, and cardiothoracic surgery followed by specialized training in general thoracic, congenital, adult cardiac, and aortic surgery in the later years.

Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research through the Duke Clinical Research Institute, fostering academic development. The program emphasizes didactic teaching and interactive learning through a structured curriculum focusing on medical knowledge, patient care, practice-based learning, systems-based practice, communication, and professionalism.

Application requirements include a personal statement, curriculum vitae, ERAS application, three letters of recommendation, dean's letter, USMLE parts I and II, medical school transcript, and ECFMG certificate for foreign medical graduates.
