The NYU Langone Health's Internal Medicine Residency Program offers a comprehensive training experience designed to prepare residents for a wide range of careers in medicine. This residency program spans across NYU Langone Medical Center in midtown Manhattan, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Residents experience a broad diversity of patients and diseases across private, municipal, and federal hospital systems, which prepares them for careers in both clinical and academic medicine.

The program boasts over 1,200 faculty members affiliated with its subspecialty divisions and is currently training more than 221 internal medicine residents. With a strong emphasis on serving culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient populations, the program aims to forge outstanding physicians through robust clinical experiences complemented by a comprehensive curriculum. Approximately 70% of graduates pursue fellowship programs with a match rate of over 98%, while the rest embark on careers as general internists in various settings.

Residents can choose from multiple tracks including Categorical Medicine, Primary Care, Community Health, Clinical Investigator, and Preliminary Medicine to tailor their training to their career goals. The program does not specify a minimum USMLE score requirement, but candidates must have passed USMLE Step 1 before applying and Step 2 before graduating medical school. A chair's letter from the Department of Medicine and two additional letters of recommendation are required for application. Applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

International graduates are welcome, and the program sponsors J-1 visas for candidates having graduated within the past three years with at least one year of U.S. clinical experience. Observerships do not count towards this requirement, and applicants must be ECFMG certified at the time of application.

The NYU Langone Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to excellence in teaching, patient care, and research, preparing residents for any field they choose. With access to a diverse research portfolio and various internal medicine tracks, the residents have numerous opportunities for specialized training and career development.

Interviews for the program are conducted from November through January for positions starting in July, emphasizing a holistic review process to assess the fit and potential of applicants comprehensively. International graduates must have had clinical experience involving direct patient care in the United States for at least one year, with observerships not qualifying as experience.

In addition to the extensive clinical training, the program offers research opportunities and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, aiming to reflect the diverse population it serves. NYU Langone Health's Department of Medicine focuses on training the next generation of medical leaders by facilitating growth in clinical skills, medical knowledge, and research capabilities through a supportive learning environment.
