Plastic surgery - Springfield, IL | ACGME Code: 3601621030
The Southern Illinois University Plastic Surgery Residency Program aims to provide comprehensive education and training to enable graduates to practice plastic surgery at the highest quality and safety standards. The program emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge, surgical skills, and research experiences. Residents have the opportunity to participate in a diverse range of plastic surgery procedures, including both cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries.
Application to the program is through the Plastic Surgery Common Application (PSCA) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The program values diversity, equity, and inclusion in resident selection. Applicants are required to have taken Step 2 before applying. They must also submit a secondary application after the PSCA application and recommendation letters. The program only considers applicants within three years of graduation.
Southern Illinois University's Plastic Surgery program requires applicants to submit a copy of their ECFMG certificate for foreign graduates. They accept J-1 Visas only. The program conducts interviews on specific dates and recommends interested students to participate in a Sub-Internship as a way to get to know the program better.
Residents in the program go through a comprehensive six-year educational curriculum covering all major surgical disciplines. Residents in PGY 4-5 spend 6 weeks at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, focusing on pediatric plastic surgery. The program provides various benefits to residents, such as onsite parking, meals, stipends, and funding for professional conferences.
There is a strong emphasis on research within the division of plastic surgery at SIU, with opportunities for residents to engage in quality improvement research and collaborate on various research projects.
