University of California (Irvine) Program

The University of California (Irvine) Program offers a comprehensive four-year residency training program in diagnostic radiology at the UC Irvine Health School of Medicine. This program is designed to cover all aspects of medical imaging, providing residents with a well-rounded experience that prepares them for careers in either academic radiology or private practice. Training is primarily conducted at the UC Irvine Medical Center and the Long Beach VA, with additional pediatric radiology rotations at Children's Hospital Orange County (CHOC).

The program boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including newly redesigned reading rooms, modern angio/interventional suites, and the latest in PACS/dictation software. Residents benefit from 12 hours of teaching conferences each week, dedicated research rotations, and a generous discretionary fund to cover various expenses including textbooks, licensing fees, and board review courses.

Residents start taking independent, in-house call after their first year, with the call structure being lighter for more senior residents to allow ample time for board preparation. The chief residents, with the approval of the program director, create the rotation, vacation, and call schedules, considering the preferences of individual residents.

For application to the residency, the UC Irvine Program participates in the Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS) and the Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applicants must submit a range of documents through ERAS, including their common application form, personal statement, medical school transcripts, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores (only passing scores are considered), and more. International medical graduates must also submit their ECFMG Status Report. The program highlights the requirement for one year of accredited clinical training in a relevant field as part of the eligibility criteria. Eligible applicants must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. The application due date is October 31, 2023, and completed applications must be received by November 15, 2023.

The curriculum of the residency program is thoughtfully structured, with residents spending 60-70% of their time at UC Irvine Medical Center and the remainder at VA Long Beach Medical Center, along with pediatric rotations at CHOC. The program is designed to provide extensive hands-on experience and is supported by daily conferences, didactic sessions, advanced imaging rotations, and comprehensive reviews in preparation for the oral board examination.
