The University of Colorado School of Medicine offers an ACGME-accredited categorical Medical Genetics and Genomics (MGG) Residency Program. They also have a combined Pediatric/Medical Genetics and Genomics (Peds/MGG) Residency program. The programs aim to train physicians in the field of pediatric medical genetics and prepare them for the Clinical Genetics Board Examination administered by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG).
Eligible MGG candidates must have an MD or DO and have completed at least one year of residency training in another ACGME-accredited primary specialty in the United States, or equivalent training in Canada. Peds/MGG candidates must have completed an MD or DO from a US or Canadian school or have current ECFMG certification. Trainees must be eligible to work in the United States and obtain a Colorado medical license before starting the program.
The MGG program is 2 years in length, and the Peds/MGG program is 4 years. The programs offer a curriculum in the scientific underpinnings of clinical genetics and provide opportunities to work with a diverse array of specialists in the field. Trainees have access to the School of Medicine's broad course offerings and can participate in various clinics, research projects, and laboratory rotations.
Throughout the program, residents have assignments based on educational value towards achieving program objectives. They spend time in genetics and metabolics clinics, university hospital genetics clinics, research projects, and affiliated laboratories. There are also didactic courses, education conferences, as well as research and scholarly activities included in the program.
