The Thoracic Surgery - Integrated Residency Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics offers a six-year ACGME-accredited training program. The curriculum provides a comprehensive experience in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of cardiovascular and thoracic diseases.

During the first three years of the program, residents have rotations in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. Multi-disciplinary education is emphasized with exposure to various specialties like vascular and endovascular surgery, cardiac catheterization, and surgical oncology.

In the final years (PGY4 through PGY6), residents focus on adult and pediatric cardiac surgery as well as general thoracic surgery. The curriculum is flexible, offering pathways in either cardiac or general thoracic surgery. Graduates are eligible for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery exams.

Application requirements include a MD or DO degree from an LCME-accredited institution, proof of ECFMG certification for graduates of foreign medical schools, USMLE Step 1 Pass/Fail (Step 2 if completed by interview date), among other documents.

The program supports research opportunities in adult cardiac, general thoracic, and pediatric cardiac surgery. An emphasis is placed on innovation, with exposure to new technologies such as robotics and minimally invasive approaches.

Residents work side-by-side with faculty members and fellow physicians, gaining experience in patient care, research, and other duties. The program is designed to prepare residents for successful careers in academic or private practice settings.
