University of Kansas (Wichita) Program
Internal medicine/Pediatrics - Wichita, KS | ACGME Code: 7001932124 | NRMP Code: 3054700C0
The University of Kansas (Wichita) Program offers a fully accredited ACGME Internal Medicine Residency Program. They provide training in internal medicine through a three-year categorical program and a one-year preliminary medicine training. Additionally, they offer a four-year Medicine-Pediatrics training program in collaboration with the Pediatrics Department.
Clinical exposure is maximized through a unique "4+1" scheduling model that separates inpatient and outpatient rotations. Residents have the opportunity to work across three hospital systems: Wesley Medical Center, Ascension Via Christi Hospitals, and the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. They also operate their own clinic with dedicated faculty and staff for the ambulatory experience.
The program aims to prepare residents for various career paths, whether in rural primary care, urban hospitalist roles, primary care, or subspecialties. Residents have the flexibility to shape their training experiences to align with their career goals.
For application processes, the program participates in the National Residency Matching Program via ERAS. They recommend applicants to complete Step 1 and Step 2 CK exams no later than November to review results prior to interviews. International medical graduates must have passed Step 1 and Step 2 CK & CS by November 1 for consideration and need to hold an ECFMG certificate by January 1 to be eligible for ranking. USMLE scores are considered but are not the sole factor in selecting applicants.
The program supports J1 visas for international medical graduates and recommends, but does not require, U.S. experience. Graduates inactive in medicine for 2-5 years are not considered. Residency starts on July 1 without early start dates.
For international medical graduates interested in a general internal medicine PGY 4 or PGY 5 chief residency position, they can contact [email protected] for more information on availability, qualifications, and the application process.
