The University of Michigan offers an ACGME approved Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship. Starting from the Summer of 2023, the fellowship will be a 2-year program conducted solely at C. S. Mott Children's Hospital. Applications are accepted biennially for a two-year ODD start date. Upon completion, graduates are eligible for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery Congenital Cardiac Surgery certification process.

The fellowship spans over two years and requires prior completion of an integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency, a 4+3 cardiothoracic program, or a 2-3 year cardiothoracic surgery fellowship. Training encompasses congenital cardiac surgery and the full range of perioperative care. The Section of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is well-regarded regionally, nationally, and internationally, specializing in pediatric cardiovascular surgery with services including high risk neonatal surgery, adult congenital heart surgery, hybrid procedures, heart transplantation, and mechanical assist devices.

The program performs around 900-1,000 cardiac cases annually, of which approximately 600 involve cardiopulmonary bypass cases. Noteworthy achievements include success in managing complex conditions like staged palliation for single ventricle lesions, complex forms of transposition, and other STAT 4 and 5 surgical procedures.

The program emphasizes a close collaboration between Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery through the University of Michigan Congenital Heart Center, fostering shared clinical case discussions, quality improvement initiatives, and research projects.
