The University of Utah Health Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship is a three-year program offered by the Department of Pediatrics' Division of Medical Genetics in collaboration with the Department of Pathology and ARUP Laboratories. The fellowship integrates clinical cytogenetics and clinical molecular genetics, preparing fellows for roles as laboratory directors or co-directors.

Fellows receive specialized training in sample preparation, analyses, and reporting of different sample types with a focus on detecting and interpreting chromosomal abnormalities and mutations in human diseases. The program includes didactic lectures, rotations in non-specialty laboratories, and participation in biochemical and medical genetics clinics. Fellows have the opportunity to develop research projects based on ongoing activities within the laboratories.

This fellowship program fulfills the requirements for the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics examination in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics. The experience is gained at Primary Children's Eccles Outpatient Services, University of Utah Hospital, ARUP Laboratories, and Hunstman Cancer Institute.

The program has four positions available with stipends commensurate with the year of postgraduate training. Applicants must hold an M.D. or Ph.D. degree in genetics, molecular biology, or a related field within the biological sciences. International applicants must have their degree reviewed by the ABMGG Credentials Committee before entering the program. The J-1 visa is required for international trainees.
