Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Program

The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited six-year integrated program that accepts two to three applicants annually. The first 24 months focus on understanding general surgery and surgical sub-specialties, while the final four years are dedicated to clinical training in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Some highlights of the program include being one of the oldest integrated residency programs in the country, a high success rate in licensure exams, high operative volume with graduated autonomy, opportunities for medical mission trips, support for clinical and bench research, and an independent chief cosmetic clinic.

The application process requires applicants to apply through the PSCA and register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Required documentation includes completed PSCA application, USMLE Step I and II, MSPE, medical school transcript, ECFMG Certification (for foreign medical graduates), personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and a current photograph.

Residents at Wake Forest engage in a variety of clinical rotations during the first 18 months, with subsequent focus on plastic surgery services, including breast reconstruction, burn reconstruction, oncologic reconstruction, hand surgery, microsurgery, and more. The curriculum includes conferences, didactics, research opportunities, and presentations.
