West Virginia University School of Public Health Program

The West Virginia University School of Public Health offers the only Occupational Medicine and Public Health/General Preventive Medicine residency programs in the Appalachian region. These programs aim to train physicians dedicated to serving rural and underserved populations across Appalachia.

Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program:

• Residents in this program are prepared to impact workplace health and safety issues, occupational diseases, and injuries through clinical, preventive, and workplace safety training.
• The program, founded in 1988, attracts physicians nationally and internationally for training.
• The two-year residency program includes clinical and administrative experiences with opportunities for residents to expand interests during rotations.
• Graduates obtain a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and a certificate in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
• The program prepares graduates to meet the requirements for board certification in Occupational Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Admissions Guidelines:

• Applicants are expected to meet the uniform requirements for graduate medical education in the United States, including completion of an ACGME-approved first postgraduate year or internship involving patient care.
• Priority is given to applicants who have completed training in clinical disciplines like internal medicine or family practice.
• International medical graduates must meet English fluency tests and uniform requirements for IMGs.
• Candidates already possessing an MPH or equivalent degree receive credit but are required to complete the two-year residency program.

Application Process:

• Applications and supporting documentation for July admissions should be submitted via ERAS to OM Program #3805577094 by September of the prior year.
• Interviews for the programs are currently conducted via Zoom.
