The William Beaumont Army Medical Center/Texas Tech University (El Paso) Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is a combined military-civilian program. Each year, four Army captains and one civilian are selected for training as orthopaedic surgeons. The program highlights the unique partnership between military and civilian components, offering trainees an exceptional training environment. The location along the border of Texas, Mexico, and New Mexico adds to the diverse training experience.

The program emphasizes a well-rounded education with a mix of military and civilian perspectives. The faculty includes experienced orthopaedic surgeons, led by Dr. Elizabeth Polfer as the Program Director.

For academics, the program provides a comprehensive curriculum with weekly formal educational sessions and daily morning reports at the Level I trauma center. Residents have opportunities for anatomy presentations, OITE review, and practical skills labs throughout the year.

Additionally, the program supports residents' participation in conferences and courses to enhance their education. Residents are encouraged to submit research to conferences, with travel funding available for accepted presentations.

The program values well-being and diversity, offering support through protected academic and wellness days, vacation time, and a significant other support group. The military staff surgeons play a crucial role in training, and while deployments are part of the program, advance notice and planning ensure residents continue to receive quality education.

If you are interested in a program that offers a unique military-civilian training experience in orthopaedic surgery with a focus on comprehensive education, William Beaumont Army Medical Center/Texas Tech University (El Paso) Program might be a great fit for you.
