Baylor College of Medicine offers a comprehensive Thoracic Surgery Integrated Residency Program, spanning six years with an optional two additional years for focused research in cardiac thoracic or general thoracic surgery. The program provides a diverse range of clinical experiences across various specialties such as cardiac, vascular, general thoracic, surgical oncology, and trauma surgery in the initial years. Residents will receive extensive hands-on experience in complex surgeries like aortic reconstructions, robotic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and structural heart interventions.
Application to the program is through the Electronic Residency Application Services system and requires the submission of a completed ERAS application, personal statement, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, USMLE Board Scores, medical school diploma and transcript, dean's verification, ECFMG certificate for international graduates, and a passport-sized photo. International graduates must adhere to additional requirements for paperwork and visa applications specified by the Texas Medical Board.
The program offers a robust educational curriculum, including lectures, grand rounds, preparation sessions, and journal clubs, to enhance residents' knowledge and skills. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in clinical research projects and are encouraged to publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
Throughout the program, residents will rotate at renowned hospitals within the Texas Medical Center, including Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Texas Children's Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Ben Taub Hospital. Baylor College of Medicine aims to train leaders in cardiothoracic surgery through exposure to a high volume of diverse cases, mentorship from accomplished faculty, and immersion in innovative technologies and research opportunities. Upon completion of the program, residents will be board-eligible in Thoracic Surgery through the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
