Overview

The Gastroenterology Fellowship at The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) is a three-year, fully accredited program by the United States Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This program is among the oldest gastroenterology fellowship programs in Brooklyn, having received its first accreditation on July 1, 1987, and celebrated its 37th anniversary in July 2024.1

The primary goal of the program is to train well-qualified, competent, and compassionate gastroenterologists. It provides comprehensive teaching across all clinical and endoscopic aspects of gastroenterology, hepatology, and advanced endoscopy. The fellowship experience includes regular core lectures, conferences in GI pathology, GI radiology, journal clubs, clinical case discussions, research conferences, quality improvement meetings, morbidity and mortality conferences, board reviews, and clinical guideline reviews, along with GI grand rounds.1

Fellows actively participate in numerous clinical research initiatives and frequently publish in peer-reviewed journals. They also attend and present at national and international meetings, including those organized by the American College of Gastroenterology, Digestive Disease Week, the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.1

Training Sites

The Brooklyn Hospital Center serves as the primary training site for the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program, which holds an academic affiliation with Mount Sinai Medical Center. Additional participating hospitals include St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, NYC Health + Hospital/Queens, and Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan.1

This diverse network of institutions allows fellows to encounter a wide range of patient populations and work closely with clinical faculty from different sites. The fellowship offers exceptional endoscopic training, with access to multiple faculty members at each site.1

Program Curriculum

The curriculum is structured to ensure that fellows acquire the necessary skills to become excellent clinical and academic gastroenterologists. It includes clinical management of inpatient and outpatient cases, advanced endoscopic procedures, and participation in diverse learning activities such as multidisciplinary tumor boards and grand rounds.1

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The program is recognized for being highly competitive. Applicants must have completed three years of training in Internal Medicine in the United States and be board-certified or board-eligible in Internal Medicine. They must apply through the ERAS platform and participate in the NRMP Specialties Matching Service.1

Application materials include official medical school transcripts, official test transcripts from required examinations, a dean's letter with three additional recommendation letters, a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, and a valid ECFMG certificate if applicable.1

Research Opportunities

During their fellowship, participants will be engaged in various research projects. The program supports fellows in their scholarly work, providing resources and time to continue their research efforts actively.1

Visa Support

The program provides visa support for international medical graduates, sponsoring J-1 and H-1B visa types, ensuring that qualified candidates from various backgrounds can participate in the fellowship.1

Benefits and Living Environment

The fellowship offers a comprehensive benefits package, which may include optical and dental coverage, life insurance, disability coverage, and reimbursement for board review courses and other professional educational expenses.2

Additionally, the Brooklyn Hospital Center is situated in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, a vibrant area known for its cultural diversity, proximity to numerous attractions, and a wide array of dining options. The fellowship experience is enriched by the dynamic living environment and wellness programs available to residents and fellows.2
