The Brooklyn Hospital Center Program offers a fully accredited Pathology residency program in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology based at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn. The program provides an outstanding training experience with exposure to diverse case material in affiliated hospitals like University Hospital of Brooklyn, Kings County Hospital Center, Maimonides Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, and the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System.
Prospective applicants need to apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program accepts applications from graduates of medical schools in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or graduates from foreign medical schools acceptable to the American Board of Pathology with an ECFMG certificate. Three letters of reference and an interview are required. The application deadline is November 30, 2023, for appointments starting July 1, 2024.
The residency program supports only J-1 visas for the 2024-2025 period. The program is IMG-friendly and requires applicants to pass USMLE Steps 1 and 2 on their first attempt. Successful completion of Step 3 is preferred for IMG applicants. Applicants should have graduated within the past 10 years. The program does not take applicants outside the Match process.
The residents at the program rotate through several hospitals, with a total surgical pathology volume of approximately 50,000 cases. The curriculum includes various subspecialties in pathology and features a mix of active learning sessions, unknown slides, faculty lectures, and resident presentations. The residency program aims to educate well-rounded and competent pathologists from diverse backgrounds.
