Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University Program
Pediatrics/Physical med & rehab (components individually accredited) - Detroit, MI | ACGME Code: 7352544024
The Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University Med-Peds Program is part of the Med-Peds movement with a history of advocating for recognition as a formal residency program. The program focuses on primary care with an emphasis on understanding the factors affecting health. Residents get exposure to diverse patient populations, including urban and underserved communities. Graduates often choose sub-specialties but are well-prepared for primary care as well.
The curriculum includes a structured intern year in Pediatrics and Medicine and dedicated blocks in the third and fourth years for board study. Residents have flexible scheduling and the opportunity to create rotations in areas of interest. There is also a dedicated Med-Peds conference, ambulatory care, and clinic supervisory roles.
The program is proud of its graduates who have pursued a variety of paths including primary care, sub-specialties like cardiology and infectious diseases, and academic fellowships. The program aims to prepare residents for success both locally and globally in the field of Med-Peds.
Application to the program involves the ERAS process, with interview season typically running from October to January. The program does not have a minimum requirement for Step exams but looks for improvement over previous scores. They accept applications from IMG applicants and recommend selecting at least 3 letters of recommendation. The interview format is currently virtual.
The program supports J-1 visas for applicants and prefers those who have graduated from medical school within the last three years. The cultural diversity and innovative practices make Detroit an exciting place for medical training, especially for those interested in diverse patient populations and advocating for health equity.
