The Public Health Residency Program at Madigan Army Medical Center is a two-year program located within the Department of Preventive Medicine. Graduates of the program are fully competent in general and military-specific public health functions. The program emphasizes formal academic education in public health, preventive medicine, occupational health clinical experiences, public health program management, disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, risk communication, and original research.

Residents are required to complete a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Washington School of Public Health during their academic training. The clinical training includes rotations at Madigan and other locations covering clinical epidemiology, communicable and chronic disease control, environmental health, occupational medicine, health promotion, and health services planning and evaluation.

In terms of clinical responsibilities, residents participate in various clinical preventive services including Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Tuberculosis and Communicable Disease Control, Tobacco Cessation, Occupational Medicine, Travel and Deployment medicine. They also take part in the Preventive Medicine Consultation Service at various military installations.

The program offers diverse rotations, including Military Preventive Medicine Course, Public Health Program Management, Management of Chemical and Biological Casualties Course, and various other training courses. Residents are expected to conduct a research project addressing a current public health problem in the community during their final year of residency.

The faculty of the program consists of board-certified physicians in the subspecialty areas of Public Health & General Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine. Faculty members are from various institutions including the Preventive Medicine Department, Regional Health Command-Pacific, local public health agencies, military consultants, and the University of Washington.

There are positions for a total of eight residents in the Public Health Residency Program, with four positions available at each year level.
