Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Program

Public health and general preventive medicine - Baltimore, MD | ACGME Code: 3802388100

The General Preventive Medicine Residency at the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is offered through the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. It is one of the oldest preventive medicine residencies in the United States, established in 1964.

The program is a two-year training program for physicians, leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. The first year includes a combination of coursework in the Master of Public Health program, residency modules, and clinical work with Johns Hopkins Community Physicians primary care practices and clinics. Residents engage in a comprehensive curriculum covering areas such as preparedness, quality improvement, lifestyle medicine, leadership, and environmental health. Research opportunities are also available, with a focus on conducting preventive medicine research.

In the second year, residents participate in practical preventive medicine rotations lasting 2-3 months each at various established sites, allowing them to gain skills in biostatistics/epidemiology, management and administration, clinical preventive medicine, and occupational health/environmental health.

Throughout the residency, residents receive mentorship from program directors to customize their training in areas such as epidemiology, global health, and program management. The program also offers a combined family medicine-preventive medicine program in collaboration with MedStar Franklin Square Hospital.

For the combined program, applicants apply through ERAS to the Franklin Square Family Medicine program. Accepted applicants are then invited to apply to the Hopkins General Preventive Medicine Residency Program with a Master of Public Health (GPMR/MPH RES) through SOPHAS. Applicants with an MPH degree may be eligible to apply to the RES-GPMR program. Additional ACGME-required preventive medicine coursework may be necessary for some applicants.

The program emphasizes research, practical experience, and a multidisciplinary approach to public health and preventive medicine.
