The MedStar Health Internal Medicine Residency program in Baltimore, Maryland, is affiliated with Georgetown University and is one of the largest internal medicine community programs in the country. Residents have the opportunity to take care of a diverse patient population at four different hospitals: MedStar Franklin Square Hospital, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Harbor Hospital, and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital.
The program offers a unique 6+2 ambulatory model for resident rotations, focusing on inpatient general medicine, intensive care units, ambulatory clinics, and electives. Residents are divided into three firms, providing a close-knit work family environment. Additionally, the program offers tracks focusing on Inpatient, Primary Care, and Global Health for residents with specific career interests.
There is an extensive curriculum that covers the ACGME core competencies through various rotations and educational opportunities. The program also offers multiple conferences and didactic learning sessions each week, including Noon Conference Series, Academic Half Days, Medical Grand Rounds, and Morning Report.
The residency program emphasizes resident wellness, with a dedicated advisor program, wellness discussion groups, and comprehensive fatigue mitigation strategies. The program also encourages resident engagement in research, providing mentorship and support for scholarly activities and publications.
For applicants, the program accepts applications through ERAS and encourages the completion of a Supplemental ERAS application for additional applicant information. The residents of the program have gone on to have careers in general medicine and fellowship training, with many choosing to stay within the MedStar Health System. The program supports J1 and H1b visas for the Categorical track.
