Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine Program

Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine (components individually accredited) - Bronx, NY | ACGME Code: 7523500001

The Family Medicine Residency Training Program at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine is designed to train family physicians who excel in providing high-quality clinical care. The curriculum integrates behavioral science, social medicine, and community involvement to prepare physicians to meet the needs of diverse, urban underserved patients and communities. The program aims to develop leaders, scholars, teachers, and advocates for health equality and social change.

Residents in the program practice at two Montefiore Medical Group sites: The Family Health Center in the mid-Bronx, serving primarily Latino, African-American, and Southeast Asian communities, and Williamsbridge Family Practice in the Northeast Bronx, serving predominantly working-class Caribbean American and immigrant populations.

Application requirements include submitting applications through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) with no minimum USMLE score requirement. However, higher scores and passing on first or second attempts are viewed favorably. Applicants are encouraged to submit personal statements emphasizing interest in family medicine, particularly in urban settings, along with strong letters of reference.

For International Medical Graduates, Montefiore Medical Center sponsors J1 and H1 visas. Applicants are required to possess an ECFMG certificate before the RANK List Deadline, with preference given to those with hands-on U.S. clinical experience and those who graduated within the past 10 years. Observerships or externships are not currently offered.

The Residency in Family Medicine combines a core curriculum with opportunities for pursuing individual interests and learning objectives. Core curriculum components include internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and surgery, supplemented by electives in various areas such as complementary therapies, HIV care, and adolescent medicine. Tracks are available for interested residents in homeless health, HIV care, reproductive health, and maternity care.

The program at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine provides an innovative and comprehensive approach to training family physicians committed to serving diverse, underserved urban populations.
