Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Program
Thoracic surgery - Newark, NJ | ACGME Code: 4603311054
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is a two-year Cardiac track program sponsored by Rutgers Biomedical Health. The program, which has been in effect since 2016, received continued accreditation by the ACGME in 2019. Residents in this program gain exposure to a wide variety of cardiac surgical illnesses, including coronary artery bypass surgery, off-pump coronary artery bypass, surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation, and congenital cardiac surgery. They also participate in a busy structural heart intervention program. Additionally, the program offers comprehensive treatment for heart failure, end-stage lung disease, heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory assistance, and ECMO service.
While primarily a Cardiac track program, residents also benefit from significant exposure to general thoracic surgical cases due to the robust thoracic surgical volume at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. Upon completion of the program, residents are expected to be proficient in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery.
Educational goals include providing training in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic and cardiac diseases, developing competence in surgical procedures, promoting systems-based practice, fostering lifelong learning and scholarly activities, and emphasizing compassionate patient care. The program aims to achieve these goals through didactic and clinical educational sessions, regular faculty supervision, and comprehensive coverage of all recommended competencies.
Fellows will participate in rotations at various sites, including Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, and Jersey City Medical Center. The program includes dedicated time for research and outpatient clinic visits. Fellows will have four weeks of vacation per year and will engage in conferences such as Journal Club and Grand Rounds.
Current fellows include Jonathan Decker, DO (Start year: 2023) and Ali Shirafkan, MD (Start year: 2022). Graduates of the program have pursued careers in various institutions and specialties.
