The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is an integrated 6-year ACGME accredited program centrally located in Newark, New Jersey at University Hospital, a level 1 trauma center. Residents also rotate through various renowned hospitals, offering a wide breadth and diversity of cases.
The program is committed to developing the next generation of leaders in plastic surgery by fostering independent thinking and innovation for excellence in patient care and cross-disciplinary research. Residents have the opportunity to present their work at local, regional, national, and international meetings.
The residency format includes 3 years of preliminary training and 3 years of plastic surgery training. Residents are required to pass all three parts of the USMLE examination before entering the third year of residency. Residents at PGY6 or later must have an unrestricted New Jersey license.
Selection of residents is done through the National Residency Matching Program, with candidates evaluated on various criteria including performance in medical school, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, dedication to plastic surgery, and academic achievements.
The program received continued accreditation for its combined and integrated programs from the ACGME. The integrated program will phase out the combined program by 2017 and undergo a self-study review in 2019.
