The San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) is a fully accredited program with a total resident complement of seven residents. This program offers four spots each year for Army applicants and three spots for Air Force applicants. It is part of a larger department with 22 active faculty representing all orthopedic subspecialties.
The program provides a vast exposure to over 4000 orthopedic cases performed annually at BAMC and the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgery Center. Residents also benefit from outside rotations in various locations including Denver, CO, Ft. Hood, TX, the US Air Force Academy, and San Diego, CA. The residency boasts a robust academic performance, scoring within the top 20% nationally on the yearly in-training examination and producing numerous peer-reviewed publications in orthopedic journals.
Applicants must be 4th-year medical student graduates with a U.S. military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC) to apply to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). The application process involves applying through the Medical Education FYGME Branch and the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Criteria for selection include academic performance, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in military service, leadership potential, and physical, mental, and moral fitness.
