The Saint Louis University Urology Residency Program aims to provide a comprehensive educational experience covering all aspects of clinical urology and research. The program includes one year of general surgery followed by four clinical years of urology training, along with weekly didactic teaching sessions.
During PGY-1, residents spend 6 months in general surgery and 6 months in Urology. This year provides a foundation for subsequent years in Urology and includes rotations in core areas like Transplant, Surgical Oncology, Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, and Pediatrics Surgery/Trauma.
In PGY-2, residents focus on ambulatory and inpatient care in General and Pediatric Urology, with an emphasis on fundamental urology problems and surgical skill development for endoscopic procedures and minor open surgery.
PGY-3 builds on the foundation of the previous years, advancing knowledge and management of stone disease, incontinence, sexual dysfunction, voiding dysfunction, and oncology. Residents develop surgical skills in more complex procedures and begin assisting in robotic surgery.
In PGY-4, residents master ambulatory and inpatient care, with exposure to pediatric urology, uro-gynecology, complex surgical techniques, and major oncology cases. Focus areas include pediatric genitourinary trauma, uro-gynecology, and complex reconstructive procedures.
PGY-5 concentrates on mastering inpatient and ambulatory adult urology, developing confidence in treating adult patients and emphasizing advanced surgical techniques. The resident also takes on administrative duties, leads conferences, and mentors junior residents.
The program promotes a mentorship and teamwork environment among attending surgeons and residents.
