University of California (Irvine) Program
Medical genetics and genomics/Maternal-fetal medicine (components individually accredited) - Orange, CA | ACGME Code: 7540500001
The University of California, Irvine Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency program offers two training options:
-
A two-year, categorical Medical Genetics and Genomics residency requiring 24 months of prior ACGME-accredited residency training in another specialty. Upon completion, trainees are eligible to take the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) examinations.
-
A four-year combined Pediatrics/Medical Genetics and Genomics training program. The first year focuses on Pediatrics, followed by alternating 6-month rotations between Medical Genetics and Genomics and Pediatrics. Residents may enter the combined program at the PG-1 level or PG-2 level if they completed a categorical Pediatrics residency within the same academic health system.
Rotations include pediatric and adult genetics services, metabolic genetics, prenatal genetics, cancer genetics, laboratory rotations, electives, and research time. The program features weekly clinical conferences, journal clubs, and didactic courses covering various aspects of medical genetics.
The Genetics faculty consists of MD/MD/Ph.D. geneticists and genetic counselors, providing one-on-one teaching to a small number of residents. The program aims to train physicians competent in both Pediatrics and Medical Genetics and Genomics.
The Pediatrics component of the four-year program offers a comprehensive educational experience focusing on pediatric care from birth through young adulthood. Training emphasizes patient care, didactic teaching, and research. UC Irvine Health serves as the primary teaching location with a variety of regional care services.
Applicants must apply through the ERAS system. For detailed information, including specific requirements, applicants can contact Dr. Maureen Bocian, the Medical Genetics and Genomics residency/fellowship director, at [email protected].
