University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Rural (Pella) Program

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Rural (Pella) Family Medicine Residency Program offers a comprehensive and full-spectrum residency training, designed to prepare residents in various areas such as adult medicine, maternal and child health, behavioral health, community medicine, and surgical specialties. The program is structured to maximize the clinical and research training of its residents in a supportive learning environment.

Application Process and Requirements: To apply to the Family Medicine Residency Program, applicants are required to submit:

• Board Exam Scores
• Curriculum Vitae
• Dean’s Letter of Recommendation
• Three Letters of Recommendation
• Medical School Transcript
• Personal Statement

Applications are accepted from September 1 to November 30, and it's recommended to apply early. Priority for interviews will be given to those who submit their applications by November 1.

Program Highlights:

• The program offers "2+2" curriculum, enabling improved continuity experience.
• Specialized training areas, including OB track, geriatrics, sports medicine, and community/underserved medicine, are available.
• Six months are dedicated to electives, allowing residents to tailor their experience according to their future career goals.
• The expansion to an 8-8-8 program provides more opportunities for incoming residents.

Training Opportunities:

Residents will engage in diverse patient care settings including hospital intensive care, emergency treatment areas, and labor and delivery suites, along with managing a panel of patients in the Family Medicine Clinic throughout the residency. The program emphasizes full-spectrum training, supported by expert mentors and rich clinical resources.

Community Engagement:

The program values community interaction and incorporates community medicine into various rotations. Residents participate in community service activities, learn about social determinants of health, and are encouraged to involve in advocacy at institutional, state, and national levels.
