University of North Carolina Hospitals Program

Thoracic surgery - Chapel Hill, NC | ACGME Code: 4603611069

The University of North Carolina Hospitals Program offers an Integrated 6-Year Residency Program in Cardiothoracic Surgery that residents enter directly from medical school. The curriculum includes rotations in various specialties and techniques to build a career as cardiothoracic specialists. The program aims to produce well-rounded cardiothoracic surgeons through a comprehensive curriculum designed for progressive resident responsibility.

The six-year residency program at UNC shortens the ABTS certification process by two years and provides a more comprehensive training in cardiothoracic surgery to adapt to evolving treatment options. The program emphasizes multi-disciplinary training to better prepare candidates for the complexity of cardiovascular and thoracic diseases. Traditional and less invasive treatment approaches are covered to optimize patient care.

Eligible applicants must be graduates of US or Canadian medical schools accredited by LCME or international medical graduates with ECFMG certification. The program participates in ERAS and only accepts applications through that system. Interviews for the cardiothoracic surgery residency program are held on selected dates from November through January at UNC Hospitals.

For further details about the University of North Carolina Hospitals Program's Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency, applicants can contact the residency coordinator, Shermeka Arrington, for more information at 919-843-6188 or [email protected]. Benjamin E. Haithcock, MD, serves as the director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at UNC Hospitals.
