University of Tennessee (Healthplex) Program

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) Saint Francis Family Medicine Residency Program is an accredited program established in 1975. It is a national leader in preparing physicians for the full spectrum of Family Medicine. The residency is based at Saint Francis Hospital in east Memphis, offering a unique setting for residents to see a wide variety of pathology and comorbid conditions.

The program aims to provide compassionate, high-quality, safe, and cost-effective care to patients. It emphasizes creating a supportive academic and work environment for residents, faculty, and staff. The program also collaborates with other entities to enhance patient care, teaching, research, and community service.

Residents in this program have opportunities for the development of procedural skills and are encouraged to tailor their residency experience through electives. The program boasts a 100% Board pass rate for the past 8 consecutive years.

Graduates of the program have pursued various career paths, including fellowships in Women’s Health, Sports Medicine, Hospice & Palliative Medicine, or Addiction Medicine. Other graduates have entered ambulatory group practice, private practice, or academic medicine.

Applicants to the program must meet specific requirements, including submitting USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, a medical diploma, medical transcripts, letters of recommendation (including one from a Family Physician), a personal statement addressing career motivations and accomplishments, and ECFMG certification for International Medical Graduates. Additionally, applicants must have documented hands-on clinical experience, and recent graduation from medical school within the previous two years.
