The Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a specialized one-year clinical fellowship designed to train individuals for a career in molecular genetic pathology. This fellowship is particularly suited for pathologists and medical geneticists seeking comprehensive training in various aspects of molecular diagnostics related to infectious diseases, hematopathology, oncology, human identity testing, and medical genetics.
1Fellows are exposed to the cutting-edge VCU Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility that spans over 6,400 square feet and performs over 25,000 tests annually. This extensive volume of work equips fellows with substantial hands-on experience and knowledge of laboratory test development and translational research
1Curriculum and Training
The fellowship includes hands-on experience with a variety of molecular techniques, including but not limited to:
- Nucleic acid extraction
- Real-time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
- Reverse transcriptase PCR
- Cytogenetics
- Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH)
- SNP analysis
- Affymetrix microarray technology
- Bone marrow engraftment chimerism studies
- Nucleic acid sequencing
In addition to the technical training, fellows interact with clinicians and other pathologists for test interpretation, allowing them to develop a well-rounded skill set essential for clinical practice.
1Rotations and Clinical Exposure
Fellows rotate through multiple clinical services, which includes:
- Human genetics clinical services
- Biochemical genetics laboratory
These rotations enable fellows to gain diverse clinical experiences which are crucial for their professional development.
1Research Opportunities
The program places a strong emphasis on research. Fellows are encouraged to engage in both laboratory-based and clinical research projects. They have opportunities to present their findings at national conferences which is essential for career advancement in academia and clinical settings.
