Overview

The Endocrinology Fellowship program at LSU Health Shreveport is a well-established, ACGME-accredited program that has been operational since 1988. With a commitment to train the next generation of top endocrinologists, the program has a solid track record where every fellow trained has successfully achieved Board Certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.

LSU Health Shreveport is integrated into a comprehensive academic health center that includes a medical school and various centers such as the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, the Regional Transplant Center, and the PET Center equipped with an onsite cyclotron. This environment provides fellows with a rich foundation for training and hands-on experience in endocrinology, metabolic diseases, and diabetes mellitus, thus ensuring a broad exposure to diverse clinical cases.

Training Objectives

The curriculum of the fellowship aims to prepare fellows to competently and compassionately handle a wide range of endocrine disorders through a focus on the following areas: developing proficiency in routine and advanced endocrinology procedures, coordinating care in multidisciplinary environments, promoting fellows' wellness, and ensuring lifelong learning. Additionally, the program prioritizes the development of clinical services focusing on obesity management in northwest Louisiana.

1

Clinical Experience

Fellows receive extensive clinical exposure through various rotations at prominent sites, including the Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport Hospital, which serves a large patient population and manages a wide variety of endocrine issues. This facility has 500 beds and acts as a referral center for over one million people, facilitating approximately 8,350 admissions to the Internal Medicine Service along with over 38,500 specialty visits annually. The fellows also gain experience at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, which adds to the diversity of cases through both inpatient consultations and diabetes management clinics.

1

Research Opportunities

During their tenure, fellows are required to complete a Scholarly project, which often involves case reports, poster presentations at national conferences, and collaboration on clinical studies with faculty support. They must also design and execute a Quality Improvement project targeting health care disparities in the community. Moreover, there are numerous opportunities for involvement in clinical trials, particularly focused on diabetes and obesity management, with the potential for basic science research collaborative efforts with associated faculty.

2

Rotations Structure

The training experience consists of structured rotations, each lasting one month, where fellows alternate between LSU Health Shreveport and VA rotations. This setup allows for personalized learning with faculty members during clinic visits, ensuring fellows can partake in the comprehensive management of both routine and complex endocrine conditions.

Key components of the rotation include:

  • Direct involvement in patient consultations.
  • Weekly conferences to discuss clinical cases, morbidity, and mortality rates.
  • Specialized training in advanced techniques including DXA interpretation and ultrasound procedures.
2

Fellow Benefits and Funding

Fellows are provided annual funding to attend a national meeting of their preference related to endocrinology, such as those organized by the American Diabetes Association or the Endocrine Society. Attendance at specialized educational sessions sponsored by recognized entities like the Mayo Clinic is also part of the training, further enriching the fellows' educational experience.

1

Application Requirements

Potential applicants should note that the program is highly competitive. Specific requirements may entail a certain year of graduation from medical school and limitations on the number of failed STEP exams, although the program aims to be friendly to both DO and IMG candidates. Visa sponsorship options may be available, typically focusing on J-1 and H-1B visa categories, thus allowing qualified international medical graduates to apply and pursue their training at this esteemed institution.

3

Graduate Outcomes

The fellowship has a strong history of its fellows successfully transitioning into both private and academic practices across various states and internationally. Alumni feedback reflects a satisfaction with the clinical training received, specifically citing the breadth of cases encountered and the support provided throughout their fellowship experience.
