Clinical informatics (Pathology)ACGME Code:
3022430001The Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital (MGH/BWH) Clinical Informatics Fellowship at Mass General Brigham (MGB) is an ACGME-accredited program designed to train physicians as leaders in clinical informatics.
Fellows will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to lead health information technology projects, advance the field’s knowledge base, and train the next generation of informaticians. The fellowship program encompasses a rich array of didactic experiences, scholarly activities, and innovative information technology projects.
Fellowship Tracks
The fellowship provides three distinct tracks to cater to a variety of medical specialties:
- Full Two-Year Track: Open to physicians from any medical specialty. This track entails an extensive involvement in informatics training intertwined with clinical responsibilities.
- Integrated Training Experience (ITE): This path is available for non-pathology fellows interested in combining a research year from their current fellowship with informatics training.
- Combined Fellowship Track: Exclusively for pathology-trained physicians, allowing dual certification upon completion.
Curriculum
The curriculum spans two years and incorporates four fundamental components: didactic education, informatics practicum, innovative scholarly projects, and clinical care.
Didactic Education: Fellows will receive education in core areas such as informatics fundamentals, clinical decision-making, health information systems, and leadership. Various lecture series will be provided, offering insights from experts within Mass General Brigham.
Informatics Practicum: A significant emphasis is placed on participating in real-world clinical information systems projects. Under faculty supervision, fellows will tackle clinical system implementation challenges.
Innovation Scholarly Project: Each fellow will need to complete a scholarly project suitable for publication in informatics literature, which may be original research, a systematic review, or a case report.
Clinical Care: Fellows will engage in part-time clinical practice or exposure to maintain their clinical skills, with variations based on the specific track.
Application Process
Applicants must be ABMS board certified or board eligible before the fellowship start date and must hold a valid ECFMG certificate if they are international graduates. For international candidates, the program sponsors both J1 and H1B visas, allowing for broader candidate eligibility.
To apply, candidates should note specific eligibility criteria for each track:
- The full two-year track requires submission via ERAS.
- The integrated training experience combines research from another fellowship.
- The combined fellowship requires clear articulation of interest in both the clinical informatics and pathology aspects.
Each track has distinct application deadlines, so it is important for candidates to be aware of and adhere to these requirements. For example, the application deadline for the full two-year track is September 15, 2024, for positions starting on July 1, 2025.
Unique Aspects of the Program
The clinical informatics fellowship emphasizes hands-on experience and engagement in groundbreaking informatics initiatives across the Mass General Brigham system. Fellows actively participate in the advancement of digital health innovations, clinical decision support systems, and electronic health records.
The fellowship's origin stems from significant contributions in health information technology innovation and was established through a merger of the Clinical Informatics and Innovation Fellowship programs.
Through this fellowship, the cohort collectively benefits from the extensive resources and expertise of two of the foremost hospitals in the United States. Fellows will graduate prepared to take the Clinical Informatics Board Exam offered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Board of Pathology.
