The Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences aims to provide an in-depth training experience for physicians interested in forensic psychiatry. Program Structure

The Fellowship spans a twelve-month period and is fully accredited by relevant authorities. The curriculum adheres to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for certification in forensic psychiatry. Fellows benefit from a robust combination of clinical practice and didactic learning, allowing for autonomous skill development through direct engagement with faculty and hands-on experiences in diverse forensic evaluation cases.

Training and Education

The program encompasses extensive training in both civil and criminal forensic psychiatry. Fellows will participate in clinical training at the Oklahoma Forensic Center, where they will deliver care to patients previously adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity/Mental Illness, as well as those undergoing competency to stand trial restoration. This portion of the training ensures that fellows acquire practical skills necessary for conducting forensic evaluations, including adjudicative competence and violence risk assessments.

Didactic Components

Fellows are expected to attend weekly didactic sessions covering a variety of topics, including Landmark Cases, Forensic Case Seminars, and Forensic Psychological Testing/Research. Exceptional supervision is provided for forensic report writing and providing testimony in legal contexts, equipping fellows with the skills required to navigate the complexities of forensic psychiatry.

Clinical Sites

The Oklahoma Forensic Center (OFC) serves as the primary training site. OFC is the largest inpatient forensic facility in Oklahoma and is responsible for providing quality forensic evaluations and psychiatric treatment in a safe environment, attuned to both public safety and patient needs.

Additional Clinical Exposure

In conjunction with training at OFC, fellows will also gain experience at the OSU Medical Center and the Tulsa Center for Behavioral Health. These facilities provide a comprehensive view of mental health services, with opportunities to engage in legally complex forensic consultations and evaluations across multiple settings.

Application Process

Applicants who wish to join the program must meet certain qualifications. A strong academic performance is essential, including a solid GPA and COMLEX or USMLE scores. Furthermore, candidates will be assessed based on their overall preparedness, communication skills, and personal attributes, such as motivation and integrity. Letters of recommendation and diverse forensic psychiatry-related involvements play a critical role in the selection process.
