The Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency Program at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University offers a 1-year ACGME-accredited training. The program aims to prepare residents for a career in academic or private practice in colon and rectal surgery. Graduates are eligible for board certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Residents will gain extensive experience in various surgical procedures, including reconstructive anorectal surgery, colorectal cancer surgery, and minimally invasive techniques such as robotics. There is a strong focus on training in anorectal physiology studies and sacral neuromodulation.
The educational experience includes a robust teaching program with various conferences covering different aspects of colon and rectal surgery. Residents work closely with the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, particularly in the care of patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Research participation is encouraged, with residents expected to engage in clinical research and present their work at national and regional meetings. The faculty is dedicated to teaching at all levels and provides opportunities for residents to lead research teams.
Life at Stony Brook includes an expectation of being on call two weekends a month, with a senior general surgery resident always present in the hospital. Residents receive a one-month vacation per year and are entitled to a competitive salary at the PGY-6 level. The program also supports attendance at national meetings and various specialty training courses.
Application to the program requires completion of USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Step 3, board eligibility/certification in general surgery, submission of ABSITE scores, and three letters of recommendation using the APDCRS Resident Candidate Assessment Form. A personal interview is also required.
