Riverside University Health System Program

The Psychiatry Residency Program at Riverside University Health System provides an enriching educational experience aimed at preparing residents to become skilled psychiatrists equipped to face contemporary healthcare challenges. Curriculum Overview

The residency program spans four years, featuring a comprehensive clinical training schedule and educational resources. It consists of rotations across various specialties, ensuring a well-rounded skill set. The training begins with the PGY-1 year, where residents focus on foundational skills through rotations in Internal Medicine, Neurology, Family Medicine, Emergency Psychiatry, and Inpatient Psychiatry, before advancing through specialized training in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Outpatient Psychiatry during the subsequent years. Key training durations for the years are as follows:1

• PGY-1: Internal Medicine (3 blocks), Neurology (2 blocks), Family Medicine (1 block), Emergency Psychiatry (2 blocks), Inpatient Psychiatry (5 blocks)
• PGY-2: Consult-Liaison (2 blocks), Child/Adolescent Psychiatry (Inpatient 2 blocks, Outpatient 2 blocks), Geriatric Psychiatry (2 blocks), Inpatient Psychiatry (3 blocks), Detention Care Unit (2 blocks)
• PGY-3: Outpatient Psychiatry (12-13 blocks), Longitudinal Electives (0-1 block)
• PGY-4: Electives including Administrative Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry.

Throughout these rotations, residents engage in psychopharmacological and therapeutic management of various psychiatric conditions, increasing their competence in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Training Sites

Training primarily occurs at distinguished facilities, namely the Arlington Campus and the Riverside University Health System Medical Center, along with the Rustin Center which hosts specialized outpatient clinics. These training sites are fully committed to treating and engaging with a diverse patient population, thereby offering residents opportunities to gain insights and experience in community-based psychiatric care. Residents in this program benefit from engagement in research through the Comparative Effectiveness and Clinical Outcomes Research Center (CECORC). Unique Aspects of the Program

This program is particularly welcoming to applicants from diverse backgrounds, including DOs and International Medical Graduates (IMGs). While it is a competitive residency, the focus is on identifying candidates with a passion for serving underserved communities and demonstrating strong clinical skills. Importantly, the program does not currently sponsor visas, and applicants need to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to be eligible for consideration:4

Special application requirements include a complete application through ERAS, USMLE or COMLEX transcripts, and three letters of reference from physicians, among others. The program reviews applications in October and November, enhancing prospects for timely communications regarding interviews and selection status.
