The Anesthesiology Residency Program at Rutgers Health/Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is a fully accredited 4-year residency, consisting of 1 clinical base year and 3 categorical years. The focus is on training residents to be proficient consultants in various anesthesia modalities for both elective and emergent situations. Residents are exposed to a comprehensive range of anesthetic techniques and are given increasing independent responsibility as they progress through their training.
The didactic component of the program includes daily resident teaching conferences, twice-weekly attending lectures, anesthesia mock orals exams, weekly Grand Rounds, and monthly journal club meetings. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in clinical research activities.
The salary structure for residents is as follows: - PGY 1: $49,809 - PGY 2: $52,723 - PGY 3: $55,727 - PGY 4: $58,943
The program provides health, hospital, dental, and prescription insurance for residents, as well as life insurance, disability insurance, and professional liability insurance. Additionally, residents receive meal allowances, vacation time, lab coats, a book allowance, and access to counseling and psychological support services.
In terms of the curriculum, residents participate in daily lectures, weekly conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, and a monthly journal club. The clinical anesthesia experience is structured to exceed the minimum requirements set by the American Board of Anesthesia.
During the CA-1 year, residents gain experience in the operating room, labor and delivery floor, Pain Service, and Post Operative Care Unit. The CA-2 year includes exposure to various surgical cases, while the CA-3 year offers elective time for further specialization.
To apply to the program, candidates can submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A complete application includes a recent photograph, personal statement, Dean's letter with transcript, certificates, ECFMG, if applicable, and 2 additional letters of recommendation. The deadline for a completed application is December 31. Selected applicants are invited for formal interviews, which are conducted in January and February.
