Welcome to the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Internal Medicine residency program. The primary mission of the program is to train the next generation of well-rounded clinicians and educators with a comprehensive foundation in all aspects of internal medicine. This mission is deeply intertwined with a strong commitment to addressing the healthcare needs of underserved communities.
Program Overview
The Internal Medicine residency at SUNY Downstate offers a distinctive education and training experience that encompasses a broad scope of clinical exposures. The residency is structured to ensure that residents gain extensive knowledge and skills needed to address healthcare challenges across diverse populations.
Clinical Exposure
The program offers a comprehensive clinical experience in Central Brooklyn, exposing residents to a diverse, multinational, and multicultural patient population. This rich environment contributes to a unique local and global health experience, as residents learn to respond effectively to the healthcare needs of patients from various socioeconomic backgrounds. A significant portion of patient care is provided at a safety-net hospital, engaging with a largely underserved, uninsured, and Medicaid population.
Curriculum
The residency's core curriculum has been thoughtfully designed based on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) blueprint. This innovative curriculum includes other critical competencies relevant to practicing internal medicine, covering areas such as practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. The program also offers tracks that emphasize either inpatient or ambulatory medicine to cater to specific career pathways within internal medicine.
Research Opportunities
Residents benefit from an enriching research environment facilitated by a university program that promotes clinical and translational research. Dedicated mentorship programs are established to foster personal and professional growth, enabling residents to engage actively with leaders in the field and gain insightful perspectives on various healthcare topics.
Training Sites
The educational experience of SUNY Downstate's Internal Medicine residency program spans across four distinct institutions. This multi-site training allows residents to gain exposure to differing healthcare systems, including state, city, federal, and private systems, thereby enriching their learning experience.
Support for Residents
The program has built a supportive structure for its residents, with formal mentorship opportunities and numerous resources available to interns and residents. A focus on developing residents as teachers is also a notable aspect of the training. Residents benefit from a medical school located on-site, further enhancing their educational and teaching experiences.
Visa Support and Application Requirements
The program welcomes applications from both U.S. and international medical graduates. Visa support is offered, and the program is capable of sponsoring J-1 visas for international medical graduates. The residency program is competitive, and applicants are encouraged to present all relevant qualifications to enhance their opportunities for selection. Special application requirements include completion of medical education not too long before the application period and limits on failed STEP exams. This emphasis ensures that candidates are well-prepared and suited for the rigors of the residency training.
Residents’ Resources
The program provides extensive resources for its residents through dedicated online platforms. Access to schedules, communication tools, and other resources facilitates a conducive learning environment, ensuring residents can navigate their training smoothly.
