Tulane University Program

The Tulane General Surgery Residency program is one of the oldest surgical residencies in the country, dating back to 1834 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. They match 5 categorical residents annually into a 5-year ACGME-accredited program. The program includes rotations at various hospitals in the metro area, including the Tulane Medical Center, University Medical Center, New Orleans Veterans Affairs Hospital, the Children's Hospital of New Orleans, and private hospitals. One chief rotation in Alexandria, LA ensures exposure to community general surgery.

The program emphasizes a graduated responsibility model to produce competent, confident surgeons. Residents are encouraged to excel in education, research, innovation, and leadership. The majority of graduates pursue fellowships in various subspecialties. A significant percentage of residents directly enter general surgery practice.

To be eligible for selection, applicants must have completed USMLE Step I, submitted a Dean's letter, and provided three letters of recommendation. USMLE Step II scores are required for ranking but not to be considered for an interview.
