Forensic Pathology Fellowship Overview
The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix offers an ACGME-accredited one-year Forensic Pathology fellowship at the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner (PCOME) in Tucson, AZ. This program is designed to equip fellows with the knowledge and skills necessary for board certification in forensic pathology, making it a comprehensive training opportunity in this specialized field.
Training Sites
The primary training site for this fellowship is PCOME, which is recognized as a National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) accredited office. Each year, PCOME manages approximately 4,500 cases, including around 100 homicide investigations, providing extensive hands-on experience to fellows.
Additional training sites for fellows include the Tucson Police Department Crime Lab and NMS Labs for forensic toxicology rotation. This diverse environment enriches the learning experience and exposes fellows to various aspects of forensic investigations.
Clinical Experience
Fellows are expected to personally conduct 200 to 250 autopsies, working under the direct supervision of eight board-certified forensic pathologists. This mentorship allows fellows to gain valuable insights and skills in performing autopsies and understanding the nuances of forensic pathology.
Moreover, the fellowship includes participation in medicolegal death investigations, where fellows accompany investigators to crime scenes. This hands-on training is crucial for learning proper scene investigation techniques, further enhancing practical skills.
Special Focus Areas
Given its location near the border with Mexico, PCOME has gained exceptional expertise in handling cases involving unidentified and skeletal human remains. In-house forensic anthropologists contribute to this area of training, offering comprehensive education in the processing and examination of complicated forensic cases.
Research and Scholarly Activities
Fellows are encouraged to engage in a scholarly project throughout the year. Successful projects can culminate in presentations at professional meetings and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals, providing an essential platform for research dissemination and professional development.
Application Requirements and Competitiveness
Applicants must be board eligible or certified in Anatomical Pathology (AP) or Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) to be considered for the fellowship program. This requirement ensures that candidates have necessary foundational training in pathology, providing a solid background for specialized forensic training.
As this fellowship program is considered highly competitive, candidates are advised to demonstrate strong academic records and relevant experience in their applications. Currently, applications are being accepted for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Stipend and Visa Support
The stipend provided to fellows is commensurate with their level of postgraduate training, ensuring that compensation reflects their experience and contributions during the fellowship. The program also offers visa support for international medical graduates, assisting with various visa types essential for securing fellowships in the U.S.
