University of California (San Diego) Medical Center Program
Overview
The Independent Interventional Radiology Program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center offers a distinguished pathway for residents who aspire to specialize in interventional radiology. As interventional radiology is now recognized as an independent medical specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), this program is structured to meet the specific training needs of aspiring interventional radiologists.
Established with full accreditation in 2017, the program is competitive, offering two ACGME-approved positions each year. The training can be completed in either one or two years, depending on a resident's prior credentials, particularly the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) certificate obtained during diagnostic radiology residency. Those with ESIR can complete the requisite training in one year, while those without it will undergo two years of rigorous training in this specialty.
Training Overview
The curriculum is comprehensive and designed to cover both theoretical knowledge and practical skills vital for a successful career in interventional radiology. Residents are immersed in the clinical environment and actively participate in procedures, thereby gaining profound insights into pre-operative and post-operative patient management, procedural indications, and complications management. Vascular imaging occupies a critical role in the training curriculum, providing residents with deep exposure to crucial imaging modalities.
Residents are also encouraged to engage in a variety of research activities, enhancing both their academic and clinical experience. The program includes valuable rotations across numerous clinical services such as ICU, Oncology, Vascular Surgery, Urology, Neurosurgery, and Neurointerventional Radiology, allowing residents to cultivate a broad skill set and collaborative working relationships across disciplines.
