Competitiveness and Application Requirements

This program is known to be highly competitive, beneficial for both U.S. Medical Graduates (USMGs) and International Medical Graduates (IMGs). IMGs are encouraged to apply but must demonstrate prior U.S. clinical experience. For IMG applicants, the program does not sponsor visas directly; however, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) can sponsor a J-1 visa, which is necessary for admission.

While there are no minimum USMLE score requirements, applicants are advised to have completed USMLE Step 1 and are encouraged to take Step 2 CK early enough for scores to be available during the selection process. The program encourages applications from under-represented and culturally diverse groups.

Curriculum Structure

The residency involves 36 months of comprehensive training. Residents experience clinical rotations across multiple settings and participate in specialized tracks such as the Clinical and Translational Science Pathway and the Primary Care Track. The Primary Care Track allows additional outpatient clinic time and development of community health projects throughout the residency.

Residents train at several key locations, including:

• UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, San Francisco: The flagship site features a range of pediatric specialties within a large quaternary care center.
• Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital: This is a major teaching hospital providing care for underserved communities.
• UCSF Mount Zion: Serves as a primary care continuity site, offering comprehensive pediatric outpatient services.
• UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Oakland: Provides a rich training environment in Emergency Medicine and allows collaborative experiences with fellows.

Research Opportunities

UCSF’s Pediatrics program provides ample research opportunities across different subspecialties. Residents can engage in various laboratory-based and population/policy research projects. The program encourages residents to participate in academic work and has the necessary resources to support their scholarly efforts, leading participants to secure independent NIH funding successfully.
