University of Connecticut Program

The University of Connecticut Foot and Ankle Fellowship is a highly structured one-year program designed to develop skilled surgeons in the field of foot and ankle orthopaedics. Collaborating with Hartford Hospital and the Bone and Joint Institute, the program offers a rich clinical experience, enabling fellows to engage with complex trauma cases, thereby enhancing their surgical competencies.

At the start of the fellowship, fellows are welcomed into a diverse learning environment that emphasizes both academic and private practice settings. They can expect to spend 1-2 days per week in outpatient clinics, where they will encounter a wide range of pathologies including sports injuries, arthritis, and pediatric cases. This longitudinal patient care approach allows fellows to monitor their patients from evaluation through postoperative recovery, ensuring comprehensive exposure to foot and ankle conditions.

Clinical Experience

Operating Room

Fellows will conduct surgeries 2-3 days per week at UConn Health, Hartford Hospital, the Bone and Joint Institute, and Orthopedic Associates Surgery Center. The fellowship promises exposure to various surgical practices including pediatric surgery, trauma, reconstructive surgeries, minimally invasive procedures, and arthroscopic techniques. The facilities feature state-of-the-art equipment, giving fellows the chance to work with the latest technologies.

Bioskills Laboratory

An onsite Bioskills Lab complements the clinical training. This facility is equipped with comprehensive orthopaedic instruments, arthroscopy resources, and cadaveric specimens. Fellows will utilize the lab at least five times a year for focused skills training sessions. Moreover, it is accessible around the clock for additional practice, providing a unique resource for hands-on learning and evaluation of new technologies.

Scholarly Activities

Didactic Teaching

Education is a priority within the fellowship, with weekly conferences held in collaboration with PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents. These conferences cover vital topics relating to foot and ankle surgery, including trauma, deformities, arthritis, and sports-related injuries. This structured schedule allows fellows to constantly engage with new information and clinical opinions from peers.

Research Opportunities

The fellowship includes three days of dedicated research time each month. Fellows will be expected to complete at least one research project during their fellowship year. They will have access to various research opportunities in biomechanics, clinical analysis, and bench research, thereby enriching their academic experience.

Fellow Well-Being

The program recognizes the importance of well-being, promoting a balanced lifestyle to support emotional, physical, and social health. Social events throughout the year include golf gatherings, barbeques, and other community-building activities.
