Overview

The University of Florida Program in Plastic Surgery offers an integrated residency that spans six years, combining comprehensive clinical training with in-depth surgical education. This program is designed to provide residents with broad exposure to all facets of plastic and reconstructive surgery, allowing for the development of a strong foundation in the specialty.

The six-year training program does not include a mandatory research year, allowing residents to focus entirely on clinical practice from the beginning of their residency. Each year, there is one position available, with interviews occurring in January and February of the match year, and invitations for these interviews sent out before November 30th.

Clinical Rotations

The majority of clinical rotations take place in Gainesville, primarily at UF Health Shands Hospital and the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center. Additional rotations for first- and second-year residents will occur at the Lake City VA Medical Center as well. Residents experience a variety of clinical settings, enabling them to manage a spectrum of conditions such as congenital anomalies, head and neck cancers, microsurgery, and cosmetic procedures.

This extensive exposure ensures that residents not only excel in operative skills but also gain experience in non-surgical aesthetic procedures, which are significant components of the outpatient enterprise.

Didactic Education and Scholarly Activities

Didactic education is a critical aspect of the program, featuring biweekly conferences and monthly journal clubs to keep residents updated on current practices and research in plastic surgery. Additionally, online resources, including self-study guides, are available to enhance learning opportunities. Residents regularly participate in grand rounds, fostering an environment of continuous learning and engagement.

Scholarly work is encouraged throughout residency, with each resident expected to complete at least one clinical study or contribute to a book chapter. Moreover, residents participate in at least one Quality Assurance/Patient Safety project each year, ensuring they are well-versed in critical aspects of patient care.

Rotation Schedule

The rotation schedule is structured to expose residents to multiple specialties, enhancing their skills in various surgical areas. Key rotations include:

  • Aesthetics
  • Breast Surgery
  • Extremity Surgery
  • Pediatric and Craniofacial Surgery
  • Hand and Plastic Surgery Clinic
  • Surgical Critical Care

This diverse schedule ensures that residents gain a comprehensive understanding of both surgical techniques and patient management across different conditions.

Visa Support and Application Competitiveness

The program is supportive of international medical graduates and provides visa sponsorships such as the J-1 visa. This commitment makes the residency more accessible to qualified applicants worldwide.

The program is competitive, attracting a diverse pool of applicants, including international medical graduates and those with Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degrees, thereby creating a collaborative learning environment.

Special Application Requirements

Applicants should be aware of specific application requirements, including examination qualifications. The program expects a strong academic record and performance on standardized exams; however, there may be consideration for applicants with one failed examination attempt, depending on their overall profile.
