Vascular Neurology | Stroke Fellowship

The University of Michigan Medical School offers an ACGME accredited Vascular Neurology Fellowship designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in cerebrovascular disease. This fellowship is available for either one year or two years, focusing intensively on the clinical diagnosis and management of both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. Candidates for this program are expected to be highly qualified and motivated, aiming to engage in clinical, health service, or basic science stroke research.

The fellowship provides extensive clinical training, allowing participants to engage in both clinical and epidemiological stroke research aspects. This includes education in fundamental research design, methodology, and analysis. Fellows are granted dedicated research time to cultivate their independent research projects under faculty supervision, thus preparing them for future opportunities in stroke research and management.

Research Opportunities

Affiliated with a Comprehensive Stroke Center designated by the Joint Commission, the University of Michigan’s Vascular Neurology program is also a regional coordinating site for StrokeNet, funded by the NIH. The fellows are uniquely positioned to participate in a wide array of stroke research projects, notably foundational studies concerning acute stroke treatments.

The program includes active collaborations with various departments, enabling fellows to explore diverse research topics including health disparities and community stroke education. Curriculum and Training Structure

The training curriculum for the program fulfills the requirements necessary for board eligibility in vascular neurology. It consists of several critical rotations: Vascular Neurology Inpatient Care, Vascular Neurology Emergency Care, Neurosurgery/Neurology Intensive Care Unit, Vascular Neurology Outpatient Clinic, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Neuroradiology.

Fellows are provided with a robust mentorship system designed to help them thrive both clinically and academically, positioning them for successful futures in various aspects of neurology.

Salary and Benefits

The fellowship offers competitive salaries and robust benefits to all participants. The financial compensation closely aligns with the rates of house officers according to the ongoing HOA contract.

Application Information

To apply, candidates must complete applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), as the fellowship participates fully in the NRMP match. Candidates should possess one of the following statuses: U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or a J-1 visa sponsored through ECFMG. It is essential to note that the program does not sponsor any other types of visas.
