1343420A0The UMKC School of Medicine offers a comprehensive Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program designed to cultivate skilled radiologists prepared for both academic and private practice environments. The program's innovative and meticulously organized curriculum ensures that residents obtain extensive medical knowledge, with rotations encompassing all major areas of radiology including cardiovascular imaging, obstetric imaging, and neuro-interventional radiology.
1Key components of the residency curriculum are centered around a core curriculum that integrates fundamental teachings in basic research methodologies, business and financial management, professional development, and competencies essential for clinical practice. This broad preparation enhances residents' abilities to navigate the complexities of radiological practice effectively.
1Educational Resources
The program boasts a dedicated Resident Education Center, established in 2014 at Saint Luke’s Hospital. This facility includes amenities such as a comfortable resident lounge, a kitchen, a call room with shower facilities, and a well-equipped 50-seat conference room called Scarpellino Hall which is integrated with state-of-the-art web conferencing capabilities.
1Residents receive free access to essential resources like e-anatomy, STATdx, RadPrimer, and online textbooks through ClinicalKey and the UMKC Health Sciences Library. Each resident is also allocated an annual educational stipend to support their academic pursuits.
1Conferences and Scholarly Activity
Residents participate in daily morning conferences that cover core curriculum topics led by fellowship-trained faculty, repeating biannually to reinforce learning. They are also involved in ongoing monthly Journal Club and Interesting Case Conferences, which are resident-led and designed to facilitate real-time feedback and interactive learning experiences.
1A Physics course aligned with established physics curricula provides residents with extensive preparation for board examinations, alongside additional support for residents pursuing scholarly work including opportunities for financial assistance for travel to national meetings.
1Clinical Rotations
Residency begins with exposure to clinical rotations allocated monthly across various sub-specialty sections at major medical centers including Truman Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center, and Saint Luke’s Hospital. This provides an opportunity to engage with diverse patient populations and pathologies, working closely with faculty physicians.
1Significant emphasis is placed on early exposure to magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and participation in courses like the American Institute of Radiological Pathology (AIRP), reinforcing vital diagnostic skills aligned with pathology and physiology.
1Mentorship and Evaluation
A supportive resident buddy system pairs first-year residents with second or third-year residents to ease their transition into the residency program and the Kansas City area. Additionally, each resident is matched with a faculty mentor in the first year to provide guidance regarding fellowships, personal issues, and professional development.
1Residents undergo regular evaluations, including formative assessments following rotations and program reviews conducted biannually with the program director to ensure continuous improvement and development.
1Research Opportunities
The program promotes an environment conducive to research, encouraging every resident to participate in at least one scholarly project. A dedicated research elective is available, and statistical support is offered to assist residents in their research initiatives.
1Residents benefit from the program's extensive award-winning research output, contributing to both personal development and the advancement of the field.
1Accreditation
The UMKC School of Medicine and its Radiology Residency Program are both fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This accreditation underscores the commitment to maintaining educational and training standards vital for developing skilled practitioners in the field.
1Visa Support and Application Requirements
The program supports certain visa applications, particularly for J-1 visas, emphasizing inclusivity of international medical graduates (IMGs) and those of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) backgrounds.
3Application requirements include a completed application form, a dean's letter, national board exam scores including USMLE Step 1, and at least two recommendation letters. It is important to note that applicants who have encountered failures on board exams or have graduated in excess of five years ago from medical school may not be competitive for entry into the program.
3Resident Competitiveness
The program is recognized for its competitiveness yet remains approachable for under-represented groups including DO students and IMGs. Typically, six positions in the residency program are available annually.
3Additional Rotational and Elective Training
In addition to required rotations, residents engage in elective training opportunities across various sites including the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital. These electives enhance learning across a multitude of subspecialties such as pediatric radiology and interventional radiology.
3Elective rotations offer residents a way to deepen their exposure and hands-on experience, laying a robust foundation for future specialized practice.
