Overview

The Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, part of the Keystone Health System, is committed to training practitioners to the highest standard in the field of sports medicine. This one-year fellowship program is fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee in accordance with the standards set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. It also supports Crozer Health's academic and wellness initiatives, ensuring a comprehensive training experience.

Program Structure

The fellowship comprises two accredited positions, allowing for focused and personalized training experiences under the guidance of experienced faculty. The primary faculty includes the Program Director, David Baxter, D.O., and the Assistant Program Director, Matthew Costa, D.O. This small fellowship size enables direct mentorship and an opportunity for fellows to gain extensive hands-on experience in the clinical settings.

Clinical Rotations

Fellows engage in multiple continuity clinics which are a critical component of the training. The primary clinics include:

  • Premier Orthopedics Springfield Sports Medicine: Fellows spend three half-days weekly working alongside the program director or associate director.
  • University of Delaware Sports Medicine Clinic: Two half-days per week are dedicated to treating NCAA Division I athletes. Here, fellows collaborate with the head team physician, athletic trainers, and physical therapists to provide comprehensive care.
  • Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Physiatry Experience: For fellows with backgrounds in these specialties, there are additional opportunities to engage in continuity experiences at the Crozer Health Center for Family Health or other affiliated departments.

Salary and Benefits

The fellowship offers a competitive salary of $75,123.00, along with various benefits designed to support the fellow's overall wellness. Benefits include health, dental, malpractice, life, and disability insurance coverage, as well as free access to the Healthplex Sports Club. Fellows also benefit from four weeks of vacation to promote work-life balance.

In terms of continuing medical education (CME), the fellowship provides annual dues for attendance at key national meetings, including the AMSSM and ACSM. Additionally, fellows receive five days and an allowance of $2,000 specifically for CME-related activities.

Application Process and Requirements

The application process for the fellowship is conducted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). It is essential for applicants to familiarize themselves with the specific requirements for entry, which may include academic qualifications, clinical experience, and credentials. Particular attention is given to the year of graduation and qualifications such as USMLE steps, ensuring that all candidates are adequately prepared for the rigors of the fellowship.

Reporting and Oversight

Fellows at Crozer Health are integrated into a structured environment, where reporting relationships are clearly defined. In the Family Health Clinic, fellows report to the director of the Family Medicine Residency Program, while in the Sports Medicine Clinic, they report directly to the program directors. The University of Delaware Sports Medicine Clinic requires reporting to its director, ensuring comprehensive oversight throughout the fellowship.

To maintain program integrity and fellow progression, there is a quarterly review process. This involves regular feedback and performance assessments with both the fellowship director and associate director, allowing fellows to continuously improve their skills and clinical practices.

Visa Support

The program offers visa sponsorship to international medical graduates, accommodating J-1 visas for those who meet the necessary eligibility criteria. This ensures that a diverse range of candidates can apply and participate in the fellowship, contributing to a richer educational experience.

Competitiveness of the Program

The Sports Medicine Fellowship at Crozer-Chester Medical Center is recognized as a competitive choice among applicants, attracting quality candidates across various specialties including DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) and IMG (International Medical Graduates). The program values diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive environment that enhances learning and collaboration.
