ChristianaCare offers a comprehensive one-year Sports Medicine Fellowship program that is fully accredited and situated within its Family Medicine residency framework, which is one of the oldest in the U.S. The program has been operational since 2007 and provides robust training in both sports injuries and general conditions affecting athletes and active individuals. The curriculum melds clinical exposure to various subspecialties, including sports cardiology, nutrition, exercise physiology, and sports psychology, amongst others, ensuring a wide-ranging educational experience.

The fellowship integrates sideline coverage, training room involvement, and event coverage through partnerships with local high schools, the University of Delaware, and community sports events. This hands-on involvement facilitates the necessary practical experience for fellows, empowering them to function autonomously in diverse sports medicine environments upon completion of their training.

Eligibility and Competitiveness

The program accepts two fellows annually who have graduated from an ACGME accredited program in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, or physical medicine and rehabilitation. There is an emphasis on candidates who are competitive, although the program is noted for being friendly towards both DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) and IMG (International Medical Graduate) applicants.

Application requirements specify that fellows must utilize the ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) during the admissions process. Applications are typically accepted from August 1 to October 1, and the program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), which requires separate registration from ERAS.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum comprises a blend of longitudinal experiences and rotations that mirror the realities faced by sports medicine physicians. Training opportunities include musculoskeletal ultrasound, diagnostic examinations, concussion management, and various injection techniques. Faculty-driven education is paramount, with fellows learning from a team of core faculty with expertise in sports medicine.

Moreover, the fellowship provides continuity experiences across different specialties, including family medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation to enhance the fellows’ skill sets further. Assessing the breadth of the training, fellows will also engage in comprehensive orthopedic and sports medicine rotations along with specialized clinics, ensuring a well-rounded exposure to sports medicine practice.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Research is a vital component of the fellowship, with each fellow expected to engage in at least one scholarly activity and one quality improvement project throughout the year. Opportunities for participation in research extend through ChristianaCare, and collaborative efforts with the University of Delaware’s Value Institute provide fellows with ample resources to conduct impactful research.

Teaching is another significant aspect of the fellowship. Fellows engage in educational programs for medical students, residents, and community health providers, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
