Allergy & Immunology

Allergy and Immunology is a specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of immune system disorders, including allergic diseases, asthma, autoimmune diseases, and immune deficiencies.

Allergists and immunologists are trained to manage conditions where the immune system either overreacts (as in allergies) or underreacts (as in immunodeficiencies).

Common allergic conditions include hay fever, food allergies, allergic asthma, and atopic dermatitis (eczema), which can significantly affect quality of life.

Immunologists also treat autoimmune disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues.

Diagnostic tools used in this specialty often include allergy testing (skin or blood tests) and immunologic assessments (to measure antibody levels or immune response).

Treatment options may involve allergen avoidance, immunotherapy (allergy shots), or medications that modulate the immune response, such as corticosteroids or biologics.

Advances in immunotherapy have dramatically improved outcomes for patients with severe allergies or asthma.

Immunologists also play a critical role in the management of immune deficiencies, where patients are prone to recurrent infections due to a weakened immune system.

By strengthening the immune response or replacing missing components of the immune system, such as with intravenous immunoglobulins, immunologists can help improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
