Obstetrics & Gynecology
Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) is a medical specialty focused on women's health, particularly in relation to the reproductive system.
Obstetrics deals with the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, while gynecology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive system, including conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and cervical cancer.
OB/GYN physicians are also responsible for routine healthcare screenings, including Pap smears, breast exams, and prenatal care.
In addition to providing preventive care, they manage complex pregnancies, perform surgeries such as cesarean sections, and treat conditions like infertility and menstrual disorders.
Advances in reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and minimally invasive surgical techniques, have greatly expanded the scope of OB/GYN practice.
The specialty also addresses women's health issues across the lifespan, from adolescence to menopause and beyond.
OB/GYN physicians must balance the emotional and physical aspects of patient care, often forming long-term relationships with their patients.
They also play a critical role in educating women about sexual health, contraception, and family planning.
