The Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to cultivate academic pediatric nephrologists who excel in care, discovery, and leadership. This program offers a comprehensive training experience that includes robust clinical exposure and extensive research opportunities, providing fellows with the necessary tools to become leaders in the field of pediatric nephrology.

Clinical Training

The fellowship encompasses a broad clinical training experience. The pediatric renal transplant service, one of the largest in the nation, allows fellows to engage in innovative, state-of-the-art care with pediatric patients. Training in all modalities of renal replacement therapy is part of the curriculum, ensuring that fellows are well-versed in managing diverse kidney disorders.

Rotations

The clinical training is structured to optimize exposure and experiences:

  • Year 1: Includes 18-20 weeks of inpatient service, outpatient clinics, a rotation with adult nephrology, renal pathology, pediatric urology, and research.
  • Years 2 and 3: Focus increasingly on independent practice, with 11 months allocated for research and continued clinical responsibilities in continuity clinics, hemodialysis, and transplant clinics.
2

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed with careful attention to both volume and variety:

  • Weekly didactic lectures cover all major aspects of pediatric nephrology.
  • Arranged didactic patient care conferences to enhance collaborative learning among fellows and faculty.
  • Regular conferences including renal pathology discussions, journal clubs for critical analysis of current research, and interdisciplinary meetings focusing on quality improvement and case discussions.
3

Research Opportunities

The program supports a variety of research endeavors, encouraging fellows to participate actively in scholarly activities. The fellowship provides access to over 30 faculty mentors engaged in NIH-funded nephrology research ranging from clinical to basic research. Additionally, the UPMC Children’s Hospital has been awarded a prestigious T32 grant from NIH specifically for nephrology research, which aids in funding research-related costs for fellows. Research interests within the division include:

  • Molecular mechanisms and congenital anomalies of kidney diseases.
  • Acute kidney injury and predictive methodologies for kidney disease prevention.
  • Clinical outcomes and pediatric transplantation.
6

Unique Aspects of the Program

The program emphasizes the importance of balance between clinical duties and personal well-being. It is designed to respect fellows' work/life balance while ensuring they receive high-quality education. This is observable in the supportive learning environment established through interdepartmental collaboration and active mentorship from experienced faculty in the pediatric nephrology division.
